Scythe Mowing

Scythe Mowing

PPLM Goes Old School with scythe mowing

The future is in the past thanks to the hot trend of scythe mowing. Yes, you read that right: PPLM is joining the many American lawn care companies that have taken our motorized mowers to the dump and used the scrap metal cash to buy our crews brand new sets of scythes. This is an exciting development for our company that we have kept secret over the winter to make sure our crews would be comfortable with this new method, but they are just as thrilled with the change as we are, and we want to share the news.

The scythe, recognized also as a sickle when given a short handle, is a long agricultural tool that dates as far back as ancient Rome. Scythes are the OG mowers and have been used for thousands of years to cut hay, wheat, and other reapable crops. Today, the scythe is most recognized as the tool wielded by the grim reaper himself. But don’t worry- scythe mowing does not portend death for your lawn!

American lawn care is in desperate need of an overhaul to move us away from gas guzzling equipment like motorized mowers. Embracing a good old fashioned hand held scythe is the best way to return to the roots of grass cutting. Not only is the scythe method far more environmentally friendly, it is more diverse as well. A scythe is versatile and efficient enough that it not only serves as a mower, but a trimmer as well.

PPLM has been admittedly slow on the uptake when making the change to scythe mowing. For years, we ignorantly viewed it as more of a novelty than anything else. Like a restored Model T, it’s great to show off around the neighborhood, but you’re not going to drive it for your daily hour long commute. Scythes require a lot of upkeep, needing to be sharpened about eight times during their use on an average sized lawn. Additionally, they are most effective for grass that has grown upwards of a foot tall rather than for taking an inch off of a residential fescue lawn. Oh, and you can forget about the nice stripes PPLM has always created with motorized mowers. This is the year of the irregular scythe arc. Arcs are the new stripes!

Scythes require sharpening multiple times at every property

You may be wondering how we have managed to overcome these obstacles and make scythe mowing safe, fun, and efficient for our crews as well as our business model. To be honest, we haven’t, but we have full faith that the whole system will just work itself out. Speaking of a work out, can you imagine how much arm, shoulder, and back strength our crews are going to develop? Too bad you won’t be able to see how muscular they get underneath their new PPLM uniforms.

That’s right, PPLM is ditching our signature hot pink work shirts and will be donning fully hooded grim reaper robes for the 2019 season. To ward off blisters, our scythe mowing crew members will also be equipped with skeleton hand gloves. Don’t worry, even in the summer, it is proven that any kind of long sleeves like those of our grim reaper scythe mowing uniforms actually keep outdoor workers cooler. That’s what we read somewhere, anyway.

So, if you’re a PPLM mowing client, get ready for the wave of scythe mowing coming to your lawn this season! We scythe responsibly, so this service poses little risk to children, pets, or the elderly. If you have any questions regarding this service, please be sure to contact your nearest PPLM reaping representative.
