– Hopewell, VA is an independent city South of the Appomattox and James Rivers and North of Prince George County. Other nearby cities include Colonial Heights, VA and Petersburg, VA.
– Established in the mid 18th century, the name Hopewell was originally the name given to a Monthly Meeting held by the area’s founders. Their association with the Friends eventually provided land for a Meeting House to the Quakers, giving Hopewell its famous Quaker origins. Despite Hopewell’s name being on the younger side of colonial history, City Point, the oldest part of Hopewell, was established in 1613 by Sir Thomas Dale. This means that City Point/Hopewell is actually the oldest continuously inhabited English settlement in the United States.
– Today, Hopewell is undergoing many urbanization projects, with a new extensive library, frequent concerts held at the recently restored Beacon Theater, and extensive beautification projects. Due to the city’s location at the confluence of the Appomattox and James Rivers, expanses of tidal marshes and river land are accessible and popular with leisure boaters, waterfowl hunters, and fishermen. The area is famous for its excellent catfishing.
