What’s Next December 2018

We’re in the final stretch of the year with every weather extreme imaginable, and abnormal low temperatures with a forecasted snow event coming seem to be the “icing” on the cake! We’re greatly looking forward to 2019 and cashing in all of our good karma now in hopes of better, more predictable weather next season. Please keep in mind that our company will be closed for Christmas to spend time with family and friends. If you aren’t able to reach us directly during that time, please leave a voicemail message or an email for our office, and we will get back to you as soon as we can. In the meantime, our fertilizer crew is hard at work finishing up the Winterizer application, which is the final round of the season. Whether you’re receiving the maintenance version of this treatment or the corrective version, this round helps your turf by putting down nutrients that will assist with root and cell development while it’s dormant for the winter. Our maintenance crews have moved on from mowing and are finishing up leaf services as well as program prunings and end of the year mulch services. This is a very busy time of year for our office as well as we crunch numbers and plan improvements to our programs and structuring for next year. Stay alert for very important contacts from our office over the next few months on recommendations for your lawn’s success next season!

Planning for 2019

As we’ve mentioned in most of our communications this year, 2018 has been nothing short of awful in terms of the extreme weather that has been thrown at the lawns in our area. While we and most other providers have been doing our best this season to adapt to each new short term climate condition this season, we are now focusing our attention on the long term impacts such a harmfully wet year may cause. When turf experiences such long term perpetual saturation like almost every lawn has experienced this year, it is almost guaranteed to develop disease caused by fungus or grubs. The susceptibility to fungus and inflated grub populations can be overcome if we have a dry season next year, but a lawn that has been damaged by fungus or a grub infestation in 2018 is more likely to suffer from some degree of relapse in 2019. As many of our clients saw this year, fungus can very quickly turn a beautiful lawn into a mottled mess, as can grub damage. For most lawns in our area, there’s been a greater dependency than usual on the fall seeding to renew the fescue turf population lost because of these issues. As a result, when the majority of lawns will be going into 2019 still fragile and recovering from such a stressful season in 2018, it is very important to take preventative measures to reduce the risk of developing a second wave of disease that could be catastrophic. To make it easier for our clients to build in fungicide and/or grub control next season, PPLM will be offering reduced rates on these services for 2019 now through March as well as monthly payment options if paired with a Picture Perfect Program. We will be contacting you during the winter to discuss options personally, but please feel free to reply to this email sooner if you know you would like to get something set up. It is our responsibility to keep your lawn as Picture Perfect as it can, but when a changing climate creates greater challenges for your lawn, it is especially beneficial to plan ahead and set your lawn up for success next season.

Frost vs Fescue

A big threat to your lawn for the next few months is freezing temperatures, morning frost, and snow, but you have more control over how much damage is done than you would think. When temperatures are low enough to form frost, freezing rain, or snow on your lawn, your grass blades themselves freeze as well and get coated in a thin layer of ice. As a result, grass that would normally bend under pressure is prone to breaking or getting crushed, leading to irreversible cell damage within those blades of grass. This means that anytime you walk on frost in the morning on the way to the street and hear the grass crunching underneath your feet, there is likely damage being done to your lawn. Unfortunately, the same can go for kids sledding in the yard, building a snowman (and then letting it sit for a week), or anything else done on the lawn when it’s frozen. The consequence of this damage is the creation of dead spots like the ones in this picture where someone walked on their frosted lawn to their car. These dead spots will usually grow out, but that won’t happen until well into spring, so be sure to stay off the lawn unless it’s had plenty of time to thaw!
