What is the Aeration and Seeding Process and Does My Lawn Need It?

Believe it or not, Fall 2018 is approaching here as the summer months start to wind down.  With the upcoming holiday events and the changing of the seasons, you will want to look into prepping your lawn for the days ahead it is time for aeration and seeding.

How Do I Know If I Should Use Aeration and Seeding On My Lawn?

This process is especially beneficial for lawns suffering from high usage, overgrown thatch beneath the grass, or not to mention a lack of proper nutrients in the soil.

High Usage – Does your lawn serve as the main area for weekend barbeques and family gatherings? After all, your lawn soil can suffer from soil compaction, which prevents water and nutrients from reaching the soil under your lawn.

Tip: If you recently had any construction finished on your house, you may want to aerate your lawn this season. Furthermore large construction equipment tends to exacerbate any soil compaction problems.

Thatch Overgrowth – Thatch is the mix of organic matter, such as roots, sticks, and leaves, underneath your grass. If your grass is unable to break down this layer faster than it accumulates, then you can get a sponge-like feel to your grass.

This build up of thatch suffocates your soil by not allowing the proper amount of water and circulation to get into the ground. Aerating your lawn helps by providing holes for water and air to circulate throughout the soil.

What Is Aeration?

Aeration is the process of poking holes into your grass to allow water and air to better circulate down to the roots of your grass and down into the soil. We recommend this service in the Fall and Spring seasons, when it isn’t too hot or too cold for your lawn.

In order to properly aerate your grass, it is key for you to use the right tools and finish the job right. If you haven’t done it before, look into hiring a seasoned lawn care maintenance professional who has the knowledge and tools for the job already on hand.

There are two common tools used to aerate your lawn: a spike aerator or a core aerator. A spike aerator uses a spiked wheel to poke small holes deep into your lawn.

While this can work, the preferred tool to use is the core aerator, which removes small cylindrical capsules of soil from the ground. Removing bigger capsules can help with water and nutrient circulation, but they also physically break up thatch beneath the surface and help to control thatch overgrowth.

If you do decide to aerate your lawn this season, you may want to look into seeding as well. The processes often go hand-in-hand to rejuvenate your grass before the holidays.

What is Seeding?

Seeding (sometimes referred to as overseeding) is the process of distributing seeds across your newly aerated lawn. Using this method, newer grass has an easier time growing in the fresh soil.

As your new grass begins to grow across the yard, it can help to crowd out weed growth.
